Why were trenches used?

These trenches were used as a way of protection. The soldiers needed to find a way to hide from machine guns and other new technology so they built trenches. These trenches would also protect soldiers from artillery bombs . Since most of the fighting happened in open fields with little cover, soldiers needed some type of cover, so they dug down. A disadvantage of trenches was that some soldiers went crazy because the space was so confined.
