What Are Trenches?

Trenches were the heart and soul of  World War 1.   Trenches are tunnels that can be accessed from the top. They originated when soldiers on the west side in WW1 decided that they didn't wanna be in their foxhole alone, so they started to connect them. In the trenches soldiers would cut out holes to sleep in and they would stack up sand bags on top of the trench to block bullets. These trenches also contained wood on the floor and walls to keep the mud from sliding down and falling in. The soldiers originally thought that these trenches would be temporary so they didn't spend much time on making them high quality. Little did they know that they would be in these trenches for years. Originally the trenches were narrow and all in one line, but then they realized if they were intruded they had nowhere to go. They then started making the trenches zigzag so they wouldn't shoot each other.
